Lactic acidosis in malignant lymphoma
Article Abstract:
Lactic acidosis is the increased acidity of the blood due to accumulation of lactate in the blood to levels greater than six millimoles per liter. This condition may be classified as type A, in which shock, or inadequate blood flow to tissues results in the accumulation of lactic acid and severe tissue hypoxia, or abnormally low oxygen levels, or type B, in which lactic acid accumulation is associated with various diseases such as diabetes, liver disease, and cancer. Lactic acidosis has been reported in patients with leukemia, a type of blood cancer characterized by excessive growth of white blood cells; lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphoid system; and several solid tumors. The outcome of patients with malignant cancer who develop lactic acidosis is usually unfavorable. Three cases are described of patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who developed lactic acidosis; non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system. All patients had elevated levels of lactic acid, resulting either from increased lactic acid production by the tumor or impaired metabolism of lactic acid by the liver. Tumor cells or products may invade or accumulate in the liver and interfere with the breakdown and elimination of lactic acid. One patient had hypoglycemia, or abnormally low blood glucose levels, indicating impaired carbohydrate metabolism in the liver. One patient died and two were given sodium bicarbonate to reduce the acidity. However, it remains unclear whether sodium bicarbonate is beneficial in improving survival in these patients. The two surviving patients improved significantly, most likely due to treatment with anticancer agents given with sodium bicarbonate. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Presidential eye on the dorm
Article Abstract:
The Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, has four sites. Asaf Botach is president of the student union. Students vote for faculty representatives though do not directly elect union officers. The union represents students and deals with problems such as accommodations. The union president argues that his job does not involve politics and he does not wish to talk about the peace process. He argues that it is important to separate politics from issues relating to students.

The big squeeze: plasma physics
Article Abstract:
Physicists at London's Imperial College plan to use a Mega-Ampere Generator for Plasma Implosion Experiments (MAGPIE) to compress plasma to the extreme densities believed to exist in stellar cores. MAGPIE will use the z-pinch technique to induce a radiative collapse in the hot plasma.
