Article Abstract:

Cambridge University Press has decided not to publish a work on Macedonia by Anastasia Karakasidou called Fields of Wheat, Hills of Blood. This decision was made following a commitment to publish the work, and the author has carried out changes recommended by the publisher. The risk of reprisals against the company's employees in Greece is slight, and the work is of a high standards. The company should have consulted more widely before taking such a decision, and a precedent has been set which could affect the publication of other works on terrorist and other organizations.

Brutality management

Article Abstract:

The dreadful scenes reported during ethnic cleansing activities in the three ex-Yugoslavia states of Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia, may have been avoided if a negotiated exchange of populations had taken place. The peace authorities could have stepped in at an earlier stage in the war and significantly reduced the amount of casualties. 70 years ago, Greece and Turkey went through a similar ordeal, where an exchange such as this took place, and although problems existed with the negotiated agreement, a lot of blood-shed was avoided.

Safe but sorry?

Article Abstract:

The Cambridge University Press has shied away from publishing politically sensitive work before the case of Anastasia Karakasido, when they rejected a research project on the Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Mustique in Paris in 1989. The excuse given for this rejection was that the work should be verified independently and that this should be assured by the institution. Many other publishers were happy to publish the research without such conditions.
