Pros and cons of a super league

Article Abstract:

The 1996 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) showed that research excellence is concentrated in a small number of elite universities, prompting the suggestion that the Government should create a cluster of research universities. The present system encourages all higher education institutions in Britain to engage in research, with universities competing for research funds on the basis of their RAE ratings. However the bulk of university funding is intended for undergraduates whose chief concern is teaching. Academics heavily engaged in research do not have the time to do much teaching.

The elitism of 'people like us.'(developing transferable skills in university students; Personal View)(Column)

Article Abstract:

Universities are seeking to produce graduates with 'transferable skills' such as analytical abilities, team-working capacities and communication skills in order to provide the 'symbolic analysts' the British economy is said to require. However, an Economist survey of research concluded that the UK does not need increasing numbers of highly educated symbolic analysts since most new jobs are in low-skill, non-technical services. Employers also tend to look for symbolic analysts in a limited range of elite universities and select employees who are the same kind of people as they are.

Alternative to Utopia

Article Abstract:

During the 1980s New Right ideologies have evolved to replace the socialist views which have dominated UK social development since World War II. Class background has been the guideline for assessing people's futures and opportunities. The New Right movement has encouraged hostility towards social institutions and the Welfare State and paid little attention to topics of economic sociology. The likely impact on what has been considered the underclass is being debated. Inequality is permissible, but not hardship.
