Republican lite?

Article Abstract:

Bill Clinton looks set to win a second term a president of the United States but his popularity is in marked contrast to his early years in office. Then he appeared inept, lacking in discipline, unable to control the terms on which major issues were debated and came close to scandal. His proposed health reforms failed to come to fruition. His record on the economy is good and he has taken political advantages by changing views where necessary but it was the Republican win in the congressional election which changed his political fortunes enabling him to perform as a moderate opposite apparent extremism.

Hot on Chile, cool on Rio

Economic policy in Latin America varies according to country, and it is difficult to make long-term predictions about the link between policies and economic performance in the region. This is illustrated by the impact of the Mexican financial crisis of 1994-1995. Colombia, Brazil and Mexico look set to improve their economic performance. Economic inequality in Latin America can affect economic growth in the long term. Levels of democracy in the region have improved but elites still retain control.
