Research cash loss to cripple dancing

Article Abstract:

The Standing Conference on Dance in Higher Education, the representative body for dance, has warned that the flourishing development of dance artistry and scholarship in the United Kingdom is in danger of being hobbled by the government's white paper on higher education. The body claims that since the launch of the first dance degree in the UK in 1976 and the start of dance research 15 years ago, the position of British dance in the international community has leapt to world leader status alongside the US, and that proposals in the white paper that could lead to a separation of research and teaching, and greater selectivity in the funding of research, could lead to the "contraction" or even "death" of dance in higher education in the UK.

United assault on Clarke plans

Article Abstract:

Natfhe, a lecturers' union, the National Union of Students and the Association of University Teachers - unions which together represent more than five millions students and 110,000 academics in the UK - have expressed their utter opposition to the UK government's plans for the biggest reform of higher education since the 1960s. The three unions have united in a campaign to block plans contained within the government's white paper on higher education to introduce top-up fees, to allow the creation of teaching-only universities and to concentrate research funding.
