Research-poor told to look to business

Article Abstract:

A new research role is to emerge for non-research intensive universities in the United Kingdom under plans unveiled in the government's white paper on higher education. Under the plans, these institutions will be steered away from basic research in order to work as consultants to local businesses with the mission of boosting local economies. Other key points of the white paper include the creation of 20 new Knowledge Exchange centres, which will provide examples of good practice in links between business and non-research intensive institutions; the expansion of involvement from regional development agencies in higher education strategies and a growth in the role played by sector skills councils in the development of relationships between university departments and local businesses.

Oxbridge is not on the Case for PhDs

Article Abstract:

Cambridge and Oxford universities appear totally uninterested in creating joint projects with industry in order to support their PhD students, claimed David Demeritt, a lecturer at King's College London's department of geography and co-author of a study looking at co-operation between universities and business. The study revealed that Russell Group universities and one-time polytechnics garner the lion's share of funding available through the Co-operative Awards in Science and Engineering scheme.
