Running with the wind of change

Article Abstract:

The Institute for Learning and Teaching (ILT) has been established to help increase excellence in teaching in the UK higher education sector. Members of the ILT were canvassed for their views on the role of the institute, in Feb 1998. They called for the ILT to work towards increasing the professional standing of higher education teachers. The ILT has a role in giving encouragement to college and universities which are willing to provide courses to help staff further develop their skills. The ILT also can work as a link between academic researchers and teachers in the field.

Hybrid ripe for change

Article Abstract:

The Teacher Training Agency's consultation paper recently issued to discuss ways of funding future initial teacher training projects, has been received with disappointment. The time is right, say Coopers and Lybrand management consultants, for the proposals to be reconsidered, and for any constructive contributions to be made regarding the development of an effective system. A Quality Development Fund is to be set up so that high-quality providers can spread their knowledge throughout the network of other initial teacher training providers.

Get back on course

Article Abstract:

A study of students leaving full-time education in north west England found that almost 40% of those who dropped out were influenced by low levels of satisfaction with the college concerned. There are a number of issues which need to be tackled to make higher education more appealing for students. These issues include the impact of increases in student numbers and the role of students as purchasers. There is a need to strengthen teaching skills within academic institutions.
