SA blacks still suffer 'campus racism'

Article Abstract:

Black academics are being forced to leave universities in South Africa, thwarting efforts to make campuses in the country more diverse and representative, according to the "Black Academics on the Move" report produced by Cheryl-Ann Potgeiter, a research psychologist at the University of Pretoria. The report, which was commissioned by the Centre for Higher Education Transformation, found that many black staff members were leaving historically black institutions for formerly white institutions, and that a large number of black staff are either considering or already have left the world of higher education entirely as a result of racism and poor leadership and management.

Campus closes as lecturers meet Mugabe's indifference

Article Abstract:

The campus of the University of Zimbabwe is quiet at the moment with no students and very few staff around as a result of a lecturers' pay strike that began in October 2002. The staff, the majority of whom did not get paid at all in March 2003, are striking over the refusal of the Zimbabwean government to grant a 50% retention allowance over and above their salaries, which they claim no longer cover living costs. The strike situation is expected to cause a fresh wave of resignations from the university, which already has a lecturer shortage with about 500 out of 1,200 academic posts vacant.
