Service comes careering bang up-to-date

Article Abstract:

The university careers service is under manned with only one advisor for every 2,500 students in some universities. The service must focus on issues of real importance and offer a range of services to suit different students' needs. The employment patterns in the UK have changed since the 1960s when the initial careers service report was produced. Employers recruit very few students into graduate training schemes within their companies and many jobs are for smaller companies on short contracts. There were 860,000 full-time students taking higher education courses during 1995-96.
