Silence greets Leviathan

Article Abstract:

Political theory has been affected by the expansion of the state from the 1940s. Debates have assessed whether the role of the state should include moral concerns or solely utilitarian considerations. The implications of wider powers were little assessed from the 1940s. This lack of analysis has led to confusion and sentimentality. The illusion that certain problems no longer needed to be tackled left welfare and the provision of public services vulnerable.
