Spreadsheets Come to School

Article Abstract:

Spreadsheet software can be used by educators to construct specifically tailored grading programs. Forty spreadsheet programs are currently available to manipulate and process numbers in tabular array. Computer-based gradebooks have many advantages. Names can be easily deleted or added; columns can be moved; tests and projects can be grouped and student weighted averages can be calculated. Other uses of this software are the tracking of latenesses and absences in a class attendance book and report card preparation. Potential disadvantages of spreadsheet software are the need to share copy protected diskettes, the scheduling of computer time and unauthorized student access to the gradebook diskette. A screen display illustrates one page of a gradebook and how information is graphed from it. A short description is given of five popular spreadsheet programs.

Choosing a Computer for Your School: A Guide to Hardware on the Market

Article Abstract:

A guide is presented to help educators get beyond tech talk, and choose the best computer for their schools based upon a list of clearly stated educational objectives. By matching these objectives with the proper software and hardware, an intelligent choice can be made. Several computers are discussed with emphasis on their value for classroom use. These computers are the IBM PCjr, the Macintosh, the Acorn, the Apple, the Franklin, the Commodore 264 and 64, the Radio Shack computers, the Texas Instruments Professional computer and the IBM PC and compatibles. A clarification is also provided of the technical talk used by salespersons.

No Recession in A-V Hardware

Article Abstract:

The majority of audio visual equipment in the schools is still film and slides. Audio visual equipment growth continues in all size school districts. The only problem is in pairing specific needs with specific equipment. Educators are able to choose from the best products, among them being Elmo Mfs.'s 16 mm projector, overhead projectors and 35mm slide projectors. A photograph of the slide projector is shown.
