Star staff cosseted in bid to up RAE rating

Article Abstract:

Top researchers at universities in the United Kingdom are being given special treatment as the institutions attempt to secure the new 4* "stellar international" research rating in the run-up to the 2008 research assessment exercise. The new 4* rating is designed to differentiate between the best and very best researchers in a way never before possible. Star researchers are being offered relief from teaching duties, funds to attend international conferences and extra research leave by universities seeking to receive 4* ratings.

A wiki way to rate work and spread scholarship

Article Abstract:

The academic community in the United Kingdom will, over the next 12 months, need to think about the ways in which it assesses itself. One reason for this self-examination is the upcoming research assessment exercise, but another reason is the growing impact of the Internet on academic journals. It is contended that the academic community should embrace the web and the ideals of open-source publication in order to evaluate, improve and publicise research.

Metrics will kill diversity claim: Subject leaders warn new system will focus on 'safe'

Article Abstract:

The 2008 research assessment exercise (RAE) will result in research being judged largely by metrics, but with various subjects treated differently. Critics believe that the new system would deepen divisions between rich and poor departments and divert funding from crucial subject areas, with the planned separation of science subjects from the rest adversely affecting research and teaching in arts, social sciences and humanities.
