The unholy market kills divine life of the mind

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the contention that the search for knowledge through contemplation as an end in itself is a worthwhile pursuit and to do away with this idea would be to undermine our very notion of civilisation are examined. It is argued that in modern society, time that is non-productive - ie that which does not have a direct relation to a form of work - is no longer valued and is merely thought of as time that allows us to return to our work refreshed, rather than being seen as a time in which we can seek some form of knowledge and improve ourselves.

Help make trade rules or get stung at market: as the WTO's Doha conference opens, Eric Froment says universities must ensure their interests are looked after

Article Abstract:

As the WTO debate over the General Agreement on Trade in Services begins, so does the likelihood that secondary education may be used as a bargaining chip. The agreement by the American Council on Education, the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, the US Council of Higher Education Accreditation, and the European University Association to cooperate in a variety of initiatives is a positive step, but should not be based on trade policy. Bargaining with education in a trade context may undermine the mission of secondary education.
