Unesco sees merit in solar power

Article Abstract:

Unesco, the United Nations agency for education, science and culture, sees solar power and other forms of renewable energy as playing a very important role in widening access to higher education. Unesco director general Federico Mayor argues that solar energy is the only way to make access on the basis of merit a reality in areas without electricity. Mayor wants higher education to become a human right enshrined in legislation across the world. Unesco is holding a series of regional meetings in the run-up to a world conference on higher education in Sep. 1998.

Hi-tech library not so new

Article Abstract:

The reading rooms of the national library in Paris have opened recently two months behind schedule and students were amongst the first readers and they will have unlimited access. However the original plans for a futuristic, virtual library suffered setbacks due to the race to finish before the end of President Mitterand's second term of office. The library catalogue is on CD-Rom, although the general catalogue will not be fully operational until late 1998 and the national collective catalogue will not be operational before 2000.
