Unions fear trade deals with US

Article Abstract:

Academics in Australia have expressed their concern that a free-trade agreement signed with the United States in week commencing 09 February 2004 could lead to US universities setting up operations in Australia and receiving the same level of benefits as local institutions. Peter Costello, Australia's federal government treasurer, noted that as a result of the agreement Australian institutions would get enhanced access to a market of about 300 million people and, while Costello refused to be specific about the exact value of the agreement, the federal government claimed that it could be worth A$4 billion in benefits to the country's economy.
