Unleashing plant power

Article Abstract:

Chemist John Wilkinson, programme leader for Middlesex University's BSc in herbal medicine, argues that the combination of traditional medical knowledge and 20th-century science can be very powerful and should be used to develop herbal medicines. Wilkinson refuses to identify the plant extract he believes could be a potential cure for Aids, arguing that it would be irresponsible for him to do so until it has undergone proper clinical trials. However he comments that he would not be surprised if the plant extracts being tested against HIV were found to be natural cocktails.

Out of the morass

Article Abstract:

A set of subject gateways on the Internet has been developed for academics under the European Union initiative Development of a European Service for Information on Research and Education (Desire). University librarians have developed the gateways, selecting the best resources available on the World Wide Web. The Desire gateways use the Resource Organisation and Discovery in Subject-based services (Roads) software. The European Web Index has also been developed as part of Desire for the evaluation of new web sites.

Atom smashing in the world's greatest machine

Article Abstract:

The European Laboratory for Particle Physics (Cern) is replacing its Large Electron-Positron Collider with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC will test theories relating to matter and models of the universe. The US Superconducting Supercollider has been cancelled, and scientists have moved from the US to Cern. Cern physicists gain marketable skills, and some work with fund managers providing economic forecasts. Particle physics is expensive so has to keep a high profile.
