An English professor at a French university presents an appraisal of the French higher education system. The advertisement and appointment of all French academic posts is centralised, and follows a period during which each potential candidate is scrutinized by a national committee of experts in the candidate's field of qualification, before they can apply for a post.

Article Abstract:

The professeur des universities at Universite Paris VII argues that while working as an academic commuter is stressful and difficult, it can have its advantages. It is acknowledged that there are strains, such as physical fatigue, that are derived directly from constant commuting, but it is contended that there are benefits, such as the illusion of independence.

Lighter teaching exams show no enlightenment

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the dropping of Shakespeare from the national qualifying examinations for future teachers in France are discussed. This is viewed as a wider measure to make examinations easier, and specifically those in English.
