Waive your legal rights, Chester tells students

Article Abstract:

Chester University has introduced a new student contract which has been criticised by Jaswinder Gill, specialist education lawyer, as it will unfairly prevent students from taking legal action over a variety of possible problems they may face at university. Chester University has defended the contract saying other institutions use similar contracts which aim to protect the income of universities.

Loan rules may bar thousands from study

Article Abstract:

Thousands of mature students may be forced to pay their GBP 3000 top-up fees up-front in 2006 as the government has blocked their access to state loans or grants. The Department for Education and Skills has confirmed that the government will not provide financial support in the 2006-07 academic year for any students who have already benefited from state financial support to study for a degree.

Firm fuels row over quality of teaching

Universities are concerned about Independent Colleges and University Tutors (ICUT) advertising on campuses as it is feared the ICUT exploits students and encourages a breach of academic rules. ICUT offers one-to-one tuition to students left 'to drift' without support.
