Article Abstract:

An overview of the way in which ethics committees tend to treat social science research, with particular attention paid to the situation in Australia and the UK's Economic and Social Research Council's research ethics framework. It is suggested that the UK system manages to avoid many of the problems of the Australian system but that there are still areas in which arguments may occur.

UCU set to sue over workload burdens

Article Abstract:

Leaders of the University and College Union (UCU) are preparing to sue employers over excessive working hours of academics, longer than the Working Time Directive allows. Increasing workloads with more administrative duties and rising student-to-staff ratios are cited as the reasons for the overwork, which result in stress, anxiety and exhaustion of the academic workforce.

If the truth offends, it's our job to offend

Article Abstract:

The academic freedom of scientists in publishing their research should not be interfered with by personal criticism and intimidation of the scientist for the implications of the research. Scientists' responsibility is only to bring out the truth, even if the truth offends critics.
