When alpha is a non-starter

Article Abstract:

The Economic and Social Research Council (ERSC) appears to reject all applications for research grants that have been revised a little, even if the revisions have been made in accordance to the Council's advise. This raises concerns related to the validity of the selection process for research applications, which may be technically sound and sensibly thought-out. Scientists in other disciplines have a choice of research councils to submit applications to, although social scientists can only use the ESRC.

Britain's excellence in basic research is no longer guaranteed

Article Abstract:

British firms do not initiate science research as much as other countries in the developed world. It is suggested that smaller university projects should be given priority to improve the situation. The drug industry in the UK is a notable exception, enjoying an international reputation and putting money back into research and development. Changes in the international political scene could facilitate improvement in science research.
