When justice is strained

Article Abstract:

Vice dean of the law faculty at Tel Aviv University, Israel, Menachem Mautner regrets that the law and its practitioners are no longer neutral in Israel. He points to the battle between those who want Israel to be a western-style liberal democracy, and those who believe that it should be a Jewish Halachic state. Mautner explains that law schools tend to be identified with western values and are looked down upon by those who identify themselves with traditional Judaism. Mautner is nevertheless encouraged by the growing number of Arab students attending his law school.

Recipes for a longer life

Article Abstract:

Roger Gosden, professor of reproductive biology at Leeds University, England, explains that there is a great deal to be said for the eating habits of most Mediterranean countries in terms of health. His ideal diet would include polyunsaturated fats, fresh fruit and vegetables, pulses and nuts taken with a drop of wine. Gosden admits that although research has shown laboratory animals are much healthier and live longer if they are put on a calorie-restricted diet, it is doubtful whether the findings can be applied directly to humans.
