China's 863 Project, 15-year push to become modern, shows results

China's 863 Project is a 15-year program that has led to the development of 2,000 patents and the publication of 47,000 research papers in six consumer technology areas, according to China Central Television (CCTV). Research has produced Yn56 billion of added value and indirect earnings of Yn200 billion. Some of the research involved computers as well as gene engineering employing computers. Also, CCTV reported that the country has set up optical fiber networks connecting Beijing to Chengdu in Sichuan province, and Zhuhai in Guangdong province utilizing domestic technologies.
