Amid rapid market expansion, CD-R makers beef up development

Article Abstract:

The global market for recordable CD (CD-R) drives is expected to reach 1 million units in 1999, up by 100% from 500,000 units in 1998. The uptrend has been attributed to increase in the number of makets and lowered prices of hardware and media. The US market is expected to account for 400,000 units of the projected demand, with around 450,000 units in Europe. The three current producers of CD-R equipment are Pioneer Corp, Marantz Japan and Royal Philips Electronics.

DVD-RAMs offered as versatile audio-video, PC storage media

Article Abstract:

The 4.7GB DVD-RAM disc based on standards established in May 1999 is now being employed as a video disc in audio-video and personal computers. Its development was in response to the increasing demand for large-capacity media that replace CD-ROMs and other formats of CD media. DVD-RAMs offer the three functions required of large-capacity media. These are performance as recording media, convenience as distribution media and multimedia capability.

DVD-RAMs offered as versatile audio-video, PC storage media

Article Abstract:

The DVD Forum has developed DVD-RAM standards to enable interoperability between audio-video and personal computer environments. The DVD-RAM standards cover 80mm discs mainly used in mobile equipment. Similar to 120mm discs, 80mm discs have random access, high write and read speeds, high durability and high reliability. DVD-RAMs conform to a copyright protection technology, called content protection, for recordable media.
