Direct satellite TV takes off like a rocket

Article Abstract:

The satellite television market is expanding and growing as vendors seek to lure cable television users. The direct broadcast satellite (DBS) market is being pursued by service providers, who are launching satellites, consumer electronics manufacturers, who are developing set-top boxes, and several semiconductor vendors, who are providing integrated circuit solutions to lower the cost of set-top boxes. Some chip makers are developing semiconductors to enable set-top boxes to digitally download interactive software from satellites. DBS designs based on the MPEG-2 video/audio compression standard are popular as are scalable architectures. LSI Logic's scalable Integra chipset will serve digital cable, telephony-based TV services and DBS. It integrates 10 chips and is expected to lower the cost of set-top boxes to $300.

BI Technologies makes the most of a new name

Article Abstract:

Beckman Industrial Corp has changed its name to BI Technologies Corp. The company made the change in 1994 because of a legal requirement and chose to use the initials BI because that is how employees normally referred to the company. The addition of 'Technologies' to its name represents a strategic shift in its focus. BI Technologies mainly manufacturers potentiometers, but has diversified itself in recent time to provide more custom solutions. New direction for the company places it in the magnetic component and screened-substrate product markets. BI Technologies had revenue of $100 million in 1995 and credits its success to enabling its customers with technology instead of forcing them to choose specific products.
