Global market for chip-making equipment softens

Article Abstract:

The worldwide market for semiconductor manufacturing equipment in Nov 2000 rose to $3.39 billion. This is an increase of 45.2% from the same period in the previous year. However, the market declined significantly compared with the two previous months. The market fell 66.3% and 68.5%, from Sep and Oct 2000, respectively. When measured by comparing sales against same- month sales one year earlier, the worldwide market for semiconductor equipment has increased for 17 consecutive months. However, signs suggest that the market has reached its peak.

Prospects rosy for MOS chips, optoelectronic devices

Article Abstract:

Demand for metal oxide semiconductor (MOS), memory chips, MOS logic chips and optoelectronic devices is predicted to grow through 2003, according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS). WSTS said this growth will be fueled by demand for flash memories for cellular telephones, as well as for laser diodes in optical communications systems and optical disc drives. Forecasters project the flash memory market will increase at an average rate of 43.3% to $19.26 billion through 2003.

Article Abstract:

The semiconductor market worldwide in year 2000 will grow 30.6% to $195.1 billion. This is because of an increasing demand for cellular telephones, network equipment and digital information appliances. According to World Semiconductor Trade Statistics, the average growth rate will stay at 17.3% annually from 1999-2003. From $149.379 billion in 1998, the semiconductor market increased 18.9% in 1999, this is predicted to almost double in scale in the following years.
