Hiring executives in changing times

The deregulation of the electric power industry is forcing many electric utilities to hire risk managers who can cope with the increasing competition in the energy market. These managers should posses excellent analytical and decision-making skills that will allow them to confront the changes in the industry.

New utility-industry index shows some big surprises

Article Abstract:

A survey of more than 90,000 electric utility company employees from 1982 through 1991 reveals that employee morale is higher than managers expected because of the number of layoffs and other changes in the companies. Complete survey results are provided.

Is there an alternative to workforce reductions?

Electric utilities have not had to lay off as large a percentage of employees as other industries. The utilities prefer hiring freezes and attrition to layoffs. The economic and productivity costs of downsizing are evaluated.
