Retail eyes a 'moving target'

Article Abstract:

The market for wireless and wireless data-ready device is projected to grow ten-fold from 1998 to $2.5 billion by 2002. The number of wireless data subscribers is also projected to grow from 2 million in 1997 by an annual rate of 40% through 2002. Thus, manufacturers of wireless data products are launching newer and more innovative lines such as 3Com's Palm VII which allows users to access up to 22 content providers. On the other hand, content providers are offering value-added services such as real-time stock quotes.

Mitsubishi with CBS: sowing seeds

Article Abstract:

Mitsubishi and CBS have formed a strategic alliance to usher in the new era of digital television broadcasting. Under the terms of the deal, Mitsubishi will shoulder the costs associated with CBS broadcasting in high-definition in the 1999-2000 television season which begins in September 1999. CBS will air 10 to 15 hours of digital programming during the entire season at a cost of about $20,000 to $25,000 an hour.

Thomson's future: Internet connection

Article Abstract:

Thomson Consumer Electronics sees the future being dominated by interactivity, with the Internet expanding its reach from the television to audio categories. To establish the company's position in that future scenario, Thomson has cultivated a relationship with WebTV. Thomson is also introducing its own proprietary interactive technology called eTV in November 1999, said COO and executive vice president Jim Meyer.
