Japanese production of materials leads 1999's pace

Article Abstract:

The Electronic Materials Manufacturers Assn of Japan reported that domestic production of electronic materials in the country amounted to 34.71 billion yen in Aug 2000, 7% higher from the year-ago period, but 3% lower from the previous period. Production of metal materials, particularly tube and semiconductor materials and spring materials, went up by 27% during the year-to-date period. There was also a double-digit growth in the manufacture of semiconductor ceramics.

Mergers remain brisk for Japanese companies

Article Abstract:

A survey done by Nikko Securities reported that 434 acquisitions and mergers took place in Japan during the first six months of 1998, a 28% increase from the same period in 1997. Analysts predicted that if this pace is sustained, the number would reach 800 by the end of 1998. Of the 434 deals, 263 were done by Japanese companies, a 26% increase from the same period in 1997. Foreign companies accounted for 45 deals, 41% higher than in 1997.
