Local-area networks: part 1 - technology

Article Abstract:

In the emerging market for local-area networks, a lack of industry standards has led the competing firms to develop systems which use a variety of topologies, access, media, and protocol schemes. Potential users must carefully evaluate the features of the networks in light of their particular application needs. Most local networks fall into one of 3 categories: low-cost low-performance systems using twisted wires, medium-cost medium performance systems using coaxial cable, and high-cost high-performance systems using broadband or baseband coaxial cable.

EDN's third annual microcomputer operating systems directory

Article Abstract:

80 operating systems are listed and analyzed in EDN's third annual directory. 8-bit microcomputer operating systems outnumber 16-bit systems by a margin of 3:2. Whereas no single 16-bit operating system can be used in all applications, the apparent standard for 8-bit microcomputers is CP-M-80 operating system from Digital Research.

Personal computer networks

Article Abstract:

Personal computer networks are being installed as a means of tying together various micro-systems into one unit. Lack of local area network standardization has caused many DP departments to go to micro-networks. Limited in size and power these networks do allow communications between systems to exist.
