Mergers, digital services remap Japan's broadcast landscape

Article Abstract:

SkyPerfecTV and DirecTV, two commnications satellite broadcasting service provider in Japan, are merging. The merged company will have more than 2.2 million subscribers and will compete against digital satellite broadcast companies. The merger is also creating a special demand for tuners. Meanwhile, TV set manufacturers are preparing to roll out their digital TVs in anticipation of strong demand after the full-scale launch of digital broadcast satellite service in Dec 2000.

Eyeglass design distinguishes personal video set

Article Abstract:

A number of television networks in Japan are forming a joint venture for the acquisition of terrestrial-wave digital broadcasting equipment. The companies include Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc, Television Tokyo Channel 12 Ltd, Nippon Television Network Corp, Asahi Broadcasting Corp and Fuji Television Network Inc. The joint venture, which will be formally established in Oct 2000, is aimed at lowering the individual capitalization required for digital broadcasting.

Toshiba to transfer automatic banking to Oki

Article Abstract:

Toshiba Corp will complete the sale of its automatic banking business to Oki Electric Industry Company Ltd by Apr 1, 1999. Oki is the leader in the Japanese automatic banking equipment industry with a 30% market share. The 7-billion yen transaction, which includes Toshiba's related service subsidiaries, will increase Oki's market share to 40%. Oki also expects sales to increase to 80 billion yen during the first year after the deal closes.
