Utility of fever and leukocytosis in acute surgical abdomens in octogenarians and beyond

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that patients aged 80 years or over may exhibit an acute surgical abdomen with a distinct diagnostic distribution. Specific surgical illnesses are indicated by the presence of marked leukocytosis and temperature in the elderly patients, although aged patients often present a normal leukocyte count and temperature despite having acute surgical abdomens. Of 117 emergency patients presenting acute abdomens, 19 suffered from bowel obstruction, 29 had acute cholecystitis and 24 had a hernia, while 1 had a carcinoid tumor and 1 suffered from diverticulitis.
