Sam's Club: more than just bulk

Article Abstract:

Wal-Mart' Sam's Club division is the biggest wholesale club in the US, with 443 wholesale sites, 33 million members and over $20 million in 1997 sales. Sam's Club, founded in April 1993, also landed the 12th spot in DEALERSCOPE's list of 1998 CE Retailing Giants, with an estimated $1.5 billion in electronic sales in 1998. The retailer's massive inventory includes big screen TVs, audio components, telephones, PCs and detergent, and brands such as Whirlpool, Magnavox, Hewlett Packard and AT&T/Lucent. Sam's Club largely concentrates on small- to medium-sized business and seeks to meet personal needs of its members.

GeoLogistics Network Solutions started as a company providing business-to- business logistics, specializing on moving medical equipment, office imaging equipment and telecommunications infrastructure equipment for business customers. The company then diversified to delivering items that exceed the UPS 75-pound-cubed weight limit, which are sold by traditional catalogers. In 1997, Geolistics established HomeDirect USA to service furniture e-tailers. Plans for the company include expansion to home electronics and entry to appliance installation.

Nationwide sights digital A/V

Article Abstract:

Nationwide Buying Group is seeking a larger share of the audiovideo market by focusing on DVD and digital television. The buying group currently has an appliance-to-electronics ratio of 70:30. Nationwide said that the right purchase orders and intensive education about the technology and vendor options will propel the group into improving their audiovideo sales operations, particularly in DVD, DBS and HDTV.
