Selecting energy efficient substation transformers

Article Abstract:

The differences between energy efficient distribution transformers and substation transformers are discussed. Losses fall into two categories of coil losses and core losses, and can be calculated using the Transformer Committee of Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers standard.

Issues concerning the need to upgrade or rebuild electricity substations in city centres are discussed. The increased demand for power, weighed against lack of suitable space, has led to a variety of solutions such as building underground substations.
