Sharp dives into HDTV, PTV at once

Article Abstract:

Sharp has opted to introduce a rear projection CRT-based set as the first product in its foray into HDTV, instead of the anticipated LCD rear projector or a widescreen direct view set. The 64LHP5000 is a 62-inch rear projection set that will carry the SharpVision brand, typically used for the firm's front video projector series. The choice of a showcase product made by one of the LCD technology leaders, had been influenced by cost concerns, said Sharp Associate Vice President Bob Scalione. Launching an LCD system would have been too costly, while a widescreen direct view set would have not done justice of showing the advantages of HDTV.

Microsoft buys into Thomson

Article Abstract:

The French government will sell roughly 30% of Thomson Multimedia to Microsoft, NEC, Alcatel Astholm and DirecTV. Microsoft will acquire a 7.5% stake in Thomson, with the other companies buying similar shares. The French government is seeking to privatize the TV manufacturer, which has about $1 billion of debt. Thomson COO Jim Meyer said each of the new partners would participate in a developing a particular product. For instance, Microsoft will help develop Windows CE for Thomson TV products, and NEC will jointly develop DVD drives with Thomson.
