Vendors offer automated meter-reading as a service - not a technology

Article Abstract:

Vendors are offering automated meter-reading (AMR) systems as a service instead of a technology because electric power utilities deem AM as too costly an investment. AMR eliminates the need for meter installation and the costs associated with communications-network operation and data handling.

AMR doesn't just read meters- it's a competitive weapon

AMR has evolved as a competitive tool to generate additional revenue. The use of digital radios and fixed networks in activating AMRs has improved utility-customer transaction and has enhanced customer service, as well as aided efficient data collection.
