Olivetti cobbles together a multimedia effort

Article Abstract:

Olivetti is positioning itself as a leader in the emerging multimedia market with plans to focus initially in Italy and the UK in the business applications market niche, such as video conferencing, payment services, Internet use and accounting. To date Olivetti has created joint ventures and alliances in a number of fields spanning the range from on-line services to electronic publishing. However, analysts doubt the strategy, pointing out that the partners Olivetti has selected are not big players, the company has an unclear technology, distribution and support strategy, and future product development is not sufficiently focused. Olivetti had losses of $422 million on sales of $5.6 billion in 1994, primarily due to the standardization of the PC industry which has facilitated the rise of the company's competitors in its main markets.

Liberalization reshapes Europe's telecom industry

Article Abstract:

The European telecommunications industry is benefiting from the liberalization of markets that its governments have encouraged. Because of existing restrictions, European companies get up to 90% of their revenue from foreign sales, but as the Jan 1, 1998, deadline looms, trade in the telecommunications market in Europe will become even freer. European companies are expected to focus on wireless telephony and data communications. Market leaders in these segments include LM Ericsson and Nokia Group, but others such as Alcatel SA, Philips Electronics NV and Siemens AG are also plunging in. These companies are likely to become more competitive as new deregulation forces them to innovate.

New technologies could stir LCD market

Article Abstract:

The liquid-crystal display (LCD) market could experience a boost as new technologies propel growth. The Japanese dominance of this market is being challenged by two European upstarts, Flat Panel Display Co BV and PixTech SA, who are focusing their effort on flat-panel displays (FPD). PixTech hopes to capture between 10% and 15% of the market by 2000 when the market will have grown to $21.6 billion globally. PixTech's ambitions may seem high, but the small 115-employee company has already signed licensing agreements with heavyweights Texas Instruments, Motorola, Raytheon and Futaba Corp of America. PixTech is also negotiating partnerships with Japanese companies.
