Wary of projections, Sony strives to keep MD leadership

Article Abstract:

Sony Corp is endeavoring to maintain its leadership in the MiniDisc (MD) format in the face of competitive threats and trends which could erode its market position. Global demand for MDs in 1998 was 1.25 million units, an increase of 89% over 1997. Sony's production capacity in Japan is 4 million units in two plants and it has an additional 1 million units at its DADC facility in Austria. To secure its position in the MD market, Sony introduced the 1.3GB GigaMO, an alternative magneto-optical format and could release rewritable DVDs in the spring.
