The emerging paradigm shift in storage system architectures

Article Abstract:

Research and development in storage systems components has increased as new networking and distributed-system technology, supercomputers, massively-parallel systems and high-performance workstations push the limits of existing storage facilities. The large-scale storage architectures for central, shared storage systems with CPU-connected devices are approaching their technological, as well as economic, limits and do not provide the performance, capacity and transparency required by today's applications. The history of storage system architectures and the requirements of future systems are discussed. The technical problems requiring investigation include network-connected devices, the use of storage hierarchies and system management. The characteristics of emerging large-scale, distributed storage architectures are described and the work of the IEEE Storage System Standards Working Group is detailed.

Air Storage System Energy Transfer (ASSET) Plants

Article Abstract:

Energy storage systems provide off-peak power generated by nuclear or coal-fired units for peak power demands. Pumped-hydro energy storage is being phased out as other methods become more available. High pressure machines have made the Air Storage System Energy Transfer (ASSET) plants a commercial possiblity. These plants are illustrated and their use examined.

The Special Section on Concepts of Energy Storage Systems

Article Abstract:

Energy storage systems alleviate peak load generation problems and provide system reliability. The latest advances in dual-type storage are in compressed air and hydrogen storage. Superconducting magnetic energy storage is a single-type scheme.
