A crude awakening for refiners

Article Abstract:

Stricter laws to further reduce toxic emissions from fuels are spurring the development of new refining processes and the upgrades of refineries. Revamping refineries is a critical factor if petroleum companies hope to cope up with the forecast that the use of heavy fuels would drop while consumption of transportation fuels would rise. New processes such as thermal processing and PdVSA's Aquaconversion are helping refiners switch between various feedstock and product slates.

Building on brownfields

Article Abstract:

There is a high price tag attached to brownfields targeted for conversion into commercial complexes, museums and stadiums. Aside from funding, brownfields redevelopment is also plagued with the question of level of clean-up done to eliminate contamination from these abandoned chemical-manufacturing sites. To resolve the issue of funding, legislation to grant loans have been enacted to alleviate the financial burden of redeveloping brownfields.
