A testing time for networks

Article Abstract:

The prime cause of network failure is well known to be faulty cabling yet once cabling is installed it is regarded as a resource to be used continuously without regard to the effects of such use. To overcome the resulting problems it is necessary to carry out regular testing and maintenance tasks on all three kinds of cabling, coaxial copper, twisted pair and fiber optic. Parameters to be measured include continuity, resistance, noise, impedance, attenuation of signal and crosstalk. Equipment is now available to enable all these tests to be done with the one piece of apparatus.

Earning from protection money: despite the intensive use of computers on most work sites, many companies do not protect their networks from supply problems

Article Abstract:

Many companies rely on their computer systems but often do not have adequate protection from supply problems, despite the fact that almost 62% of power disturbances cause some negative computer effect. Disturbances include electrical noise, surges and drops in supply which can cause hardware and software damage, harmonics which can cause a disproportionate rise in current and complete power failures. UPS technology can offer insurance and the three main types available are off-line, line interactive and true on-line systems.
