Better route to anilines developed

Article Abstract:

A better process for producing anilines has been developed by researchers at the University of Rochester in New York. The technique replaces palladium with chromium chloride using combinatorial chemistry. The substitution allows the manufacture of a huge variety of anilines simultaneously as chromium chloride energizes a rare solid-to-solid catalytic reaction. Anilines are used in the production of drugs, film, dyes and plastics.

Dimethyl ether may power diesels

Article Abstract:

Dimethyl ether (DME) holds promise as fuel for heating applications and diesel engines, according to researchers at Pennsylvania State University and Allentown, PA-based Air Products and Chemicals. DME was shoen to have lower carbon monoxide emissions and the same or lower NOx emissions than n-butane or propane. DME also has lower emissions than diesel fuel, but has very poor lubricating properties.
