Welcome to the always-on world

Article Abstract:

The fact that a theater performance can be disrupted when a cell phone rings is symptomatic of a much profounder change being brought about by communications technologies. The impact of communications on human relationships, which until recently might have been described as episodic, now is becoming always-on. This impacts peoples' lives in diverse ways. For example, employees are never beyond employers' reach, even on vacations. For another example, when every relationship is potentially present everywhere, it becomes necessary to juggle, and attention becomes characteristically divided. We do not yet understand this new world very well, but we apparently will all have to adapt to it.

Streamlining the Internet-fiber connection

Article Abstract:

The fact that Internet traffic is expected to double every six months over the next few years means the existing communications infrastructure will need to be developed to handle huge traffic volumes. Because data traffic is expected to grow more rapidly than voice, a new infrastructure will have to be optimized for voice, which most probably means Internet protocol (IP). Optical fibers can be exploited using wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), but creating an arrangement that carries IP via a WDM infrastucture is a complex undertaking that will require careful planning.
