Mindstorms: not just a kid's toy

Article Abstract:

Lego Co's Mindstorms construction toy was originally intended for use by children, but adults are using its programmable Lego bricks to build autonomous gadgets such as various kinds of robots. Engineers, academic researchers, and hobbyists who use the game are referred to as Adult Fans of Lego (AFOLs), and the company has begun offering helpful information and has established a Web site for them.

A proof of concept Gauss rifle is created from parts that include silicon-controlled rectifiers and a 12-volt transformer. The device is not powerful enough to propel a 25-gram projectile but better equipment could create a better device.
