Cabinet reshuffle hits DoE's middle-rankers

Article Abstract:

The Department of Environment has undergone middle and junior level changes, including the replacement of patrician minister for planning and construction Viscount Ullswater with Robert Jones. Environment and countryside minister Robert Atkins has also been replaced by Earl Ferrers. A number of new junior ministers have also been appointed. Other new appointments include transport secretary Sir George Young; Welsh secretary William Hague; and Scottish secretary Michael Forsyth.

The monster that's so damned useful: at 88, planning guru Sir Colin Buchanan is penning his life story

Article Abstract:

Professor Sir Colin Buchanan helped produce Traffic in Towns over 30 years ago, a publication which warned of the consequences of not taking the explosion in care use seriously. He is approaching his 88th birthday and is completing his autobiography, The Monster We Love So Dearly. He left the civil service in the 1960s and estbalished Colin Buchanan and Partners, a private practice.

District councils' unitary deadline expires

Article Abstract:

Some of the UK's 21 district councils have submitted strong cases to the Local Government Commission (LGC) in favour of being allowed to switch to unitary status. This would allow them to unite all local services. The LGC is now to make recommendations to the secretary of state by Jan 1996.
