'A' for effort: undergraduates in CMU project, singly or in pairs, transferred academic know-how about software technology to industry

Article Abstract:

The AWEsim experiment is being successfully implemented among some engineering firms, such as Signal Integrity Inc, a start-up firm located in Pittsburg. AWEsim, which stands for asymptotic waveform evaluation and simulation of circuit interconnect and packaging techniques, is both a computer program developed at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and part of a project the university first suggested, whereby college students transfer technology to high-tech companies. According to CMU professor of electrical and computer engineering and co-developer of AWEsim, Ronald Rohrer, little university-developed software is used in industry because engineers are too busy to give it a try. Rohrer says AWEsim aids large linear passive interconnect circuits in efficiently performing low-order dominant pole(s)/zero(s) approximations.

The search for better batteries

Article Abstract:

Researchers are looking for rechargeable batteries with more energy, higher efficiency and lower self-discharge for various power consuming electronic systems. Nickel-cadmium cells with high power rating are ideal for power tools and portable instruments but suffer from memory effect. Zinc-air technology based cells require air management to limit self-discharge and are sensitive to electrical abuses. Problems due to high lithium reactivity led researchers to pursue lithium batteries with solid polymer electrolytes.
