Component part standardization: a way to reduce the life-cycle costs of products

Article Abstract:

Component part standardization, a widely accepted practice in manufacturing wherein several components are replaced by a single component that can perform all their functions, presents both advantages and disadvantages. A strategy for improving manufacturing performance and maintaining product variety to fulfill customer needs, component standardization reduces most of the costs in nearly all phases of the product life cycle. However, standardized components may have excess functionality that may increase the volume, weight and cost of the component, potentially leading to increased power consumption and, consequently, higher operational cost.

A production order quantity model with stochastic demand for a chocolate milk manufacturer

Article Abstract:

A model was developed to solve a chocolate milk manufacturer's production planning problems. Production planning is made complex by the stochastic nature of the demand for the manufacturer's products. An analysis of the production planning via the dynamic programming approach showed that the company's production order variable was convex. Running the model through first-order partial derivatives of the expected total cost function yielded the optimal solution to the company's production planning problem.

A multicriteria approach to the selection of preventive maintenance intervals

Article Abstract:

Maintenance planning requires a multicriteria approach to achieve the proper level of preventive maintenance in a production system. The PROMETHEE (Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations) answers the problem of maintenance planning with its ranked alternatives carried out by pairwise comparison. In the case study of the paper factory, preventive maintenance interval is considered as a multicriteria decision-making issue using expected total costs and reliability as criteria.
