Article Abstract:

Stephen Byers, the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in the UK, was examined by a Parliamentary Committee, led by Conservative chairman, Dr Michael Clark. In reply to Dr Ashok Kumar's questions regarding the amount of money spend by the UK on research and development, Byers indicated how little is spent in comparison to amounts spent by countries such as Japan, the USA, and countries in Europe.

Expanding structures reach out to save lives

Article Abstract:

The mechanical linkage invented a hundred years ago has formed a basis for novel expanding building frames, cylinders, stadium roofs and other structures. The oriental paper folding has provided the inspiration to devise a new type of stent to keep open human arteries and air passages, as well as expandable pillars and beams for use on spacecraft.
