Dark side of the 'friendly' oils

Article Abstract:

The multitude of commercial fluids available makes choosing the correct sealing material very difficult. Hydrogenated nitrile rubber (H-NBR) is effective when used with mineral oils, vegetable oils, water containing pressure fluids, and most of the polyalkylene glycol fluids. Most mineral oils can be sealed with polar elastomers up to their highest operating temperatures. Natural unsaturated fatty acid vegetable oils can only be used in mobile hydraulic equipment in cold conditions, as they have pour/melting points of between minus 15 and minus 25 deg C. Polyalkylene glycol fluids are only slightly soluble in mineral oils, making cleaning of oil tanks and components necessary. Synthetic esters are expensive, so can only be used where their entire low temperature and thermal features are employed. Basic hydraulic sealing elastomers and recommendations for applying sealing materials are also presented.

Cast ferrous parts go ultra-thin

Article Abstract:

Automotive Technology, UK, has been set up to give UK designers access to FM casting, a new ferrous casting process. So far the process has only been available to motor manufacturers in the US and Europe. As a result of the new process, walls can be as thin as 2.8 mm, cutting thermal inertia and the time taken for catalytic converters to warm up. It also means a better surface finish and greater resistance to fatigue. Applications include exhausts, engine brackets and mounts, turbocharger bodies, pumps, suspension components and alternators, and could later include cylinder heads, crankcases, differential housing, and transmission, and applications in other industries.
