Degrees of defense effectiveness

Article Abstract:

Writer David E. Mosher's article 'The Grand Plans' substantially exaggerates the strategies scrapped in the nation's ballistic missile defenses as they were being pursued. Spending for ballistic missile defense begun simultaneously with the emergence of ballistic missile technology and has since then been consistent. That the federal government has spent nearly a hundred billion dollars in this area but has no ballistic missile defense system to show for it is very obvious.

S&E degrees to women up, but down nationally

Article Abstract:

The National Science Foundation reports a continuing increase in the number of women and minorities who are pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in science and engineering. However, a report from the American Electronics Assn (AEA) revealed that the total number of engineering and allied field degrees conferred to the entire population actually decreased by 5% from 1990 to 1996. Based on the AEA report, only business information systems registered an increase.
