The color of these pigments depends on your own point of view

Article Abstract:

BASFAG, based in Ludwigshafen, Germany, is constructing a facility for the manufacture of color-variable pigments (CVP) in Besigheim in Germany. CVP, marketed as Variochrom, is composed of thin film-covered reflective aluminum platelets that emit various colors based on viewing angle and film thickness. The platelets, which measure 15 micro meters to 20 micro meters in diameter and 300 nm to 500 nm in thickness, is produced by melting aluminum in a 625-degree heat and atomizing the substance to generate small pellets. The company hopes that CVP will have wide use in cosmetics, automotive paints and colored plastics.

A simpler, cheaper way to make 1,6-hexanediol

Article Abstract:

Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. of Tokyo, Japan, has developed a 10%-20% cost-effective one-step method of formulating 95%-1,6-hexanediol. The new process technology utilizes adipic acid which Mitsubishi Chemical outrightly transforms into 1,6-hexanediol by applying heat at 200 degrees Celsius and 100 bars with the use of platinum and other noble metals as proprietary catalysts. In line with the newly developed process technology, Mitsubishi has laid out a blueprint to consruct a 10,000-metric-ton-per-year 1,6-hexanediol plant which is scheduled to be operational in two years.

A cheaper route to 1,4-butanediol

Article Abstract:

BASF AG of Ludwigshafen, Germany, will establish a pilot plant to produce 1,4-butanediol (BDO) with an annual capacity of 10 mt using a new process. The new process incorporates BASF's process for manufacturing of maleic anhydride (MAH) through butane oxidation with ester-dydrogenation technology, which was developed by Kaerner Process Technology of London. The integration of BASF's MAH manufacturing process will enable the production of BDO without having to separate and purify the intermediate MAH and removes need for a distillation equipment.
